Family Literacy Day, celebrated annually on January 27, is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. PWPSD schools are getting ready to celebrate on Thursday, with some schools expanding the event to include a full week of activities.

| Bezanson School | Starting Monday, January 24, and throughout the entire week, students are invited to “Bring a Book, Take a Book”. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character on Friday, January 28. |
| Harry Balfour School | To celebrate Literacy Day, students will spend the week working on a school-wide collaboration bulletin board where students are welcomed to share their favourite books. Indigenous speakers will be visiting the school to read to students, and Mystery Readers will be popping in to share stories with classes. A literary-themed dress-up day, and a pyjama and reading fort day are also planned. |
| Hythe Regional School | Students will participate in a Tournament of Books, where they will help determine which book is their favourite one of the year. Classes are also invited to take advantage of the school’s Literacy Bags, which each contain a book and coordinating manipulatives that go with it! A fun Bingo Read-A-Thon activity will be sent home with students to help promote extra reading time with families. |
| Rycroft School | Starting Monday, January 24, students are invited to participate in a week-long book swap. Wednesday, January 26 is ‘Dress up as your favourite character’ day, and families are encouraged to read together on Thursday, January 27. The week will wrap up with a fun pyjama day on Friday, January 28! |
Literacy Day 2022 encourages families to get outside and discover new ways of learning. The ABC Life Literacy Canada website says, “Spending time in nature provides many benefits, not just for bodies, but for minds too. This year, get outside and exercise both your mind and body together as a family. You can make outdoor time fun family learning time all while enjoying the wonders of Canada’s Great Outdoors!”
The organization invites families to join Honorary Chair Barbara Reid online as she demonstrates how to use clay to create a picture, followed by a Q & A session. The virtual event will be held on January 27 at 2:30 p.m. MST, and is ideal for children in Grades 1-6. Anyone interested in attending is asked to register as soon as possible as space is limited.
